TEMPE. ARIZ. - The Arizona State University football team will face eight bowl teams from 2013 on its 2014 football schedule, as announced by the Pac-12 Conference Office today. Those teams include non-conference foe Notre Dame and Pac-12 Conference members UCLA, USC, Arizona, Stanford, Washington, Oregon State and Washington State.
Notre Dame visits Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field on Saturday, Nov. 8 for the second time in history. ASU hosted the Fighting Irish in Tempe in 1998.
The 2014 Sun Devil football schedule is on the cycle of having five Pac-12 road games and four league home games. ASU has two Thursday games – the season opener versus Weber State on Thursday, Aug. 28 and a Pac-12 Conference home opener with South Division rival UCLA on Thursday, Sept. 25. ASU will play one Friday game – the Friday, Nov. 28 game in Tucson against in-state rival Arizona. ASU will be looking to defend its 2013 Territorial Cup victory and make it three in succession in the series.
ASU will play only two home games before Oct. – Aug. 28 vs. Weber State and Sept. 25 vs. UCLA. ASU’s annual Homecoming game will be on Saturday, Nov. 1, hosting Pac-12 South Division rival Utah. The Sun Devils will play host to the annual Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 22 vs. Washington State.
After the season opener vs. Weber State on Thursday, Aug. 28, ASU will have nine days to prepare for its Sept. 6 game at New Mexico. Following its Pac-12 league opener at Colorado on Sept. 13, ASU will have 12 days to prepare for its Sept. 25 game with UCLA at Sun Devil Stadium. Then ASU will have nine days to prepare for its Oct. 4 trip to USC. After the USC matchup the Sun Devils will enjoy two weeks to prepare for Stanford’s visit to Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Every Pac-12 team will have two "misses" each year, or teams they do not face. ASU's misses in 2014 are California (1-11) and Oregon (11-2).
The Pac-12 Championship game will be played on Friday, Dec. 5 at the home stadium of the team with the best overall conference record.
“We’re excited about the upcoming 2014 season,” says third-year Head Coach Todd Graham. “We have won 18 games in the past two seasons and are ready to build off that momentum. We want to finish strong in recruiting and then turn our attention to Spring football practices.”
“After winning the Pac-12 South Championship, hosting the Pac-12 Championship game, winning 10 games and defending our Territorial Cup trophy we are excited about the prospects of the 2014 season,” says interim Director of Athletics Dr. James Rund. “The way a schedule is constructed is very important to the success of a football team and this particular schedule is both challenging for our team and exciting for our fans. We are looking forward to the 2014 campaign.”
For the third year in a row, fans all across the country will be able to watch every football game played at Pac-12 sites. A combination of the ESPN channels, ABC, FOX and FOX Sports 1 will broadcast 44 games nationally and Pac-12 Networks will offer 35 games to a national audience. Exact broadcast schedules will be determined at a later date.
Coach Graham, the reigning Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year, returns seven All-Pac-12 Conference performers in 2014, including quarterback Taylor Kelly, wide receiver Jaelen Strong, offensive lineman Jamil Douglas, linebacker Carl Bradford, running back D.J. Foster, tight end/h-back De’Marieya Nelson and placekicker Zane Gonzalez. In addition, two freshman All-Americans return in placekicker Zane Gonzalez and linebacker Salamo Fiso.
