TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State women’s gymnastics team returns to action, Saturday, in a quad-meet against Washington, San Jose State and UC Davis at Alaska Airlines Arena. The meet, hosted by the Huskies, starts at 5 p.m. MT or 4 p.m. PT. Follow along with live scoring and updates at @ASUGymnastics on twitter.
The Gym Devils are coming off a season-opening tri-meet against San Jose State and Sacramento State, where the team showed off its immense potential. ASU competed solidly through two events highlighted by a team score of 49.050 on vault and a career-high 9.900 on bars by sophomore Carissa Kraus.
Previously, the Sun Devils had only scored a team total above a 49.0 on vault once last season. In a sport where scores tend to creep up as the season moves forward, scoring a 49.050 in the first meet is an excellent place to start. The team is ranked 13th in the nation in the event after one meet.
Kraus, who earned a scholarship after walking on her freshman year, scored the highest individual total of the meet with her bar score. Kraus is ranked 10th, individually, on bars and 4th in the Pac-12 Conference after week one.
Washington (0-1) scored a record-high season opening score of 195.025 for head coach Joanne Bowers against Minnesota. The Huskies performed strong on bars and beam, scoring 48.950 on each event to open the season. Aliza Vaccher led UW in the all-around with a score of 39.250.
The Sun Devils will also face San Jose State (2-4) for the second time in as many weeks and UC Davis (2-3) on Saturday night.
