TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State wrestling team split its home-opening dual matches on Saturday, defeating Utah Valley, 18-16, before falling to Northern Colorado, 24-15, inside Wells Fargo Arena.
“We didn’t wrestle too badly today, but we had a couple breakdowns in some of our matches,” head coach Shawn Charles said. “Our lightweight guys need to step up their game. From 125 to 157 in both duals, our guys are getting beaten and giving up falls.”
Competing at 174 for the first time this season, Ray Waters went 2-0, first defeating Utah Valley’s Monte Scmalhaus in an 8-4 decision. Against Northern Colorado, Waters picked up his team-leading fifth pin of the season, taking down Josh VanTine in 2:31.
“Our upper weights, I think carried us,” Charles continued. “Ray Waters and Blake Stauffer brought us into position where we could win the match against Northern Colorado, and we’re proud of that, but we got into a bad situation at 197, and it caused us to lose the dual. Chace Eskam has also been wrestling hard for us at heavyweight. He is consistently competing and we’re pleased with that.”
Blake Stauffer also went 2-0 on the day, first picking up a 4-0 decision over Ethan Smith before he picked up a major decision over Nick Bayer, 10-1.
Wrestling for the first time this season, Cord Coronado picked up a 6-4 decision at 133 over Northern Colorado’s Michael Espinosa.
Matt Kraus picked up a split on the day at 141, winning his second match in a 10-6 decision over Northern Colorado’s Nick Adams.
Going into next week’s Pac-12 opener, the Sun Devils are 5-5 in dual competition for 2013-14.
“Going into Pac-12, we’ve learned a lot,” Charles said. “We’re still trying to teach this young group of guys that this is a team sport. There are a lot of individual accolades, but it’s a team sport and there is a team score. All the competition so far is just going to help us to do well in conference.”
The first conference match of the year for the Sun Devils will also mark ASU’s first-ever Beauty and the Beast meet, as wrestling will take on Boise State at the same time ASU Gymnastics takes on California. The match is set to start at 5 p.m., and the wrestling portion with also be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
“I’m excited to host the Beauty and the Beast meet next week,” Charles added. “It’ll be a great opportunity for some people who have never seen wrestling before to see our sport. Boise State is a good program, so there will be some exciting matches, and I hope we get a good turnout for it.”
