TEMPE, Ariz.—Head volleyball coach Jason Watson announced the schedule for Arizona State’s inaugural sand volleyball season on Tuesday.
The schedule features four matches contested at ASU’s new home, the PERA Club, which is located three and a half miles north of the Tempe Campus.
“This is our first official sand season,” Watson said. “Our home will be the PERA Club, just north of campus. We will have access to three courts, three of the best courts in Phoenix, if not anywhere. It’s an exciting partnership and without which, we couldn’t start our sand program as quickly as we have. We will be traveling as well. With the sport being in its infancy, there are a lot of things we will be learning as we go, but it’s a sport with the potential to be popular and competitive.”
Joining Watson’s coaching staff is indoor volleyball director of operations Jacquelyn Scarduzio, who will be his lone assistant coach for the squad.
ASU will open the season on Saturday, March 1, with its annual Maroon and Gold Scrimmage at 1 p.m. MT.
The Sun Devils will make two treks down I-10 to Tucson, the first on March 7-8 for the Arizona Invitational. ASU will take on Grand Canyon (March 7), Arizona Christian (March 8), and Arizona (March 8).
The Wildcat Spring Challenge will bring ASU back to Tucson, as the Sun Devils face Tulane on March 14 before they take on Arizona Christian for the second time this season on March 15.
ASU will host its first true home match on Wednesday, March 26, versus Nebraska at 3 p.m., before returning to the road, this time to Santa Monica, Calif., for the Pac-12 Tournament April 19-20.
The Sun Devils will round out the season at home, hosting Arizona on April 24 at 3 p.m. MT before playing their finale against Boise State on April 25 at 4 p.m. MT.
PERA, which stands for Project Employees Recreation Association is a private club for the employees and families of the Salt River Project.
The 83-acre club houses a social center, employee store, fitness center, swimming pool, game courts, and fields and offers children's programs, fitness classes, business meetings, sports leagues, and parties.
