SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team finished the first day of competition in 2014 with an unblemished 2-0 record after dismantling Cal State Monterey Bay, 23-2, in the night cap of the opening day of the UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Freshman Alkistis Benekou scored six goals in her second game at ASU after scoring a hat trick against Azusa Pacific earlier in the day, bringing her one-day total as a Sun Devil to nine goals.
Annie Kertes added five goals in a monstrous day for the junior that saw her log four goals in the opener. The five goal performance was a new career high for the junior and, in one day of action, she has gone over one-third of her production level as far as goals from last season where she finished with 26 goals.
Freshman Izabella Chiappini had her second hat trick of the day for the Sun Devils while Ao Gao and Abbey Kerth each added hat tricks of their own. Petra Pardi also had two goals while Katie Sverchek had a goal. Pardi had an absolutely exceptional day dishing the ball, adding six assists to her two goals.
Gao and Kertes each contributed three steals each in another fine defensive effort.
In the cage, the Sun Devils again split the time between E.B. Keeve and Ianeta Hutchinson and again each only allowed one goal to the Otters in a half of action. Keeve finished with eight saves while Hutchinson had six. The two keepers gave up just four goals in two games on Friday while the ASU offense combined for 40 goals.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University opened the 2014 season with a dominating 17-2 victory over Azusa Pacific in the opener of the UCSB Winter Invite on Friday in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Junior Annie Kertes led the way with four goals, while the youngsters on the team provided a promising look in their Sun Devil debuts as freshmen Alkistis Benekou and Izabella Chiappini each added a hat trick to the cause.
ASU gave both redshirt sophomore E.B. Keeve and senior Ianeta Hutchinson a look at goalkeeper and each was sensations, allowing a goal each with Hutchinson logging six saves and Keeve adding five of her own.
The Sun Devils did not allow a goal in the second half of the game, outscoring the Cougars 9-0 in the third and fourth quarters to pull out to the dominating victory.
Abbey Kerth, Daisy Carter and Petra Pardi all added two goals for the Sun Devils while the latter two added three steals to pace the team. Liz Kreek didn’t find the back of the net, but did her part with three assists to lead the team.
The Sun Devils will resume the competition against CSU Monterey Bay later this afternoon at 4 p.m. PT.
