Sun Devil Water Polo Splits on Day Two at UCSB Winter Invite

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State water polo squad split its two games on the second day of action of the UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Saturday. ASU took care of No. 17 UCSB, 11-6, in the opener before dropping a hard-fought 12-11 decision to No. 14 UC San Diego in the cap of the day.

The Sun Devils will take on No. 6 UC Irvine tomorrow at 12:40 p.m. PT to wrap up the weekend of action. Complete game recaps are found below. 

ASU 11, UCSD 12

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team dropped its first match of the season in a hard-fought 12-11 loss to No. 14 UC San Diego at the UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Tritons capitalized on a strong second half, climbing to a four-goal lead that the Sun Devils could not quite overcome despite a strong fourth-quarter comeback.  With the loss, ASU dropped to 3-1 on the season.

ASU got yet another strong game out of freshman Alkistis Benekou, who had three goals in the contest. The performance marked four games in four appearances that the newcomer had scored three or more goals. 

Petra Pardi added three goals as well while Katie Sverchek, Annie Kertes, Ao Gao, Izabella Chiappini and Kate Enoka all had one goal each.

The Sun Devils were done in by an exceptional performance by UCSD senior Sarah Lizotte, who had five goals in the competition. She was backed up by multi-goal perforamcnes from Alexis Wieseler (3), Jolene Guiliana (2) and Melissa Bartow (2).

UCSD goalkeeper Courtney Miller had nine saves in the game while the ASU combination of E.B. Keeve and Ianeta Hutchinson logged 13 saves total in the game.

The Sun Devils will wrap up the UCSB Winter Invite and the opening weekend of competition tomorrow against No. 6 UC Irvine at 12:40 p.m. PT.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team continued its winning ways in the season opening UCSB Winter Invite after taking down the host No. 17 UCSB, 11-6, to start the second day of action in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The freshman tandem of Alkistis Benekou and Izabella Chiappini continued their strong Sun Devil debuts as each logged three in the contest. In three games this season, Benekou has combined for 12 goals while Chiappini has had three in each game thus far.

Petra Pardi added a goal and team-leading three assists for the Sun Devils and sophomore Ao Gao had two goals.  Liz Kreek and Abbey Kerth each had a goal to round out the scoring.

Sophomore E.B. Keeve was stellar in the cage for the Sun Devils as she picked up 12 saves and just five goals against.

The Sun Devils improved to 3-0 with the victory and it was their first over a ranked opponent this season.  ASU will take on No. 14 UC San Diego later this afternoon with the opening whistle set to blow at 4:30 p.m. PT.
