SUN DEVIL DIGITS: The Sun Devil men's hoops team, averaging 77.2 points in its 16-5 start, plays at Stanford on Saturday,Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network and 620 AM/98.7 FM. ASU has won three straight (vs. Utah, Colorado and at California) and has guaranteed itself a winning loop record at the midway point of the Pac-12 season. ASU will try and sweep the Bay Area road trip for the first time since the 2004-05 season and sweep a Pac-10 road trip for the first time since a 2009-10 sweep at the Oregons.
THIS IS AN EYE OPENER: According to the NCAA updated stats Friday morning and its "toughest schedule" chart, ASU's future opponents are currently 100-37 (.730), which is best percentage in the nation.
WORTH A MENTION EARLY: Jordan Bachynski entered Pac-12 play this season a career .566 free throw shooter (180-of-318). In Pac-12 games this year he is shooting 32-of-39 (.821) from the line.
JORDAN'S FIRST THREE SEASONS COMPARED TO THIS YEAR
2010-13 (89 GAMES): FG%: .570; 6.6 PPG.; 4.3 RPG; 2.0 BPG
2013-14 (21 GAMES): FG%: .586; 11.6 PPG; 8.8 RPG; 4.2 BPG
SINCE THAT LINEUP CHANGE: ASU shook things up a little when it started Eric Jacobsen (one career start prior) vs. Utah on Jan. 23 and decided to bring Jon Gilling off the bench…ASU has won three straight since…Giling, who had started 71 straight games, is 8-of-12 (.667) from three and 10-of-16 (.625) from the floor and averaging 10.7 points and five boards…Jacobsen is averaging 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in those three games (2.1 ppg and 1.7 rpg prior)…ASU was being outrebounded in the first 18 games, but in last three is outrebounding opponents by five per game.
SERIES INFO: Stanford holds a 44-31 edge over Arizona State in the all-time series, which originated in 1957. The Cardinal, which has won seven of the last 10 meetings, had its six-game winning streak snapped when the Sun Devils prevailed 89-88 in overtime last March in the opening round of the Pac-12 Tournament. Stanford won last year’s only regular-season meeting, defeating Arizona State 62-59 in Tempe.
AUTISM AWARENESS: Coach Sendek and Johnny Dawkins are two of nearly 100 men’s basketball coaches throughout the country that will be wearing the “Autism Speaks” pin on suit jackets Saturday. Towson’s Pat Skerry and Marshall’s Tom Herrion, each who have sons on the autism spectrum, have started a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about this disease.
SO MANY BIG GAMES LEFT: One peek at the Sun Devil schedule shows tons of big opportunities, as ASU has 10 conference games left including RPI heavy teams Arizona (2), Colorado (24), Oregon (44), Stanford (49), and California (51). The Sun Devils are the only Pac-12 school with all those on their schedule twice, and no one else even has UA, UO and CU twice. ASU does not play the Washington or the LA schools again.
ASU 89, @CAL 78, OT (1/29/14): ASU led for 19:45 of the first half, pushed the lead to 16 early in the second half, gave up the lead with 45 seconds left, was down three with 25 ticks left yet forced overtime on a Jermaine Marshall three-pointer with 19 seconds left and ASU outscored Cal 17-6 in overtime for the win Wednesday…Jahii Carson had 29 points, while Jermaine Marshall had 22…ASU was 9-of-19 from the three-point stripe, while Cal was 4-of-13…ASU outrebounded Cal 39-32 and made 12-of-16 (.750) free throws in overtime to seal the win…ASU got 68 minutes, 15 points and 12 rebounds from its bench, Cal got 52 minutes, seven points and two rebounds.
BLOCK-CHYNSKI!: Jordan Bachynski's NCAA-best 89 blocks is more than 241 D-I teams and 12 more than current silver medal blocks guy Khem Birch. He needs just 31 blocks to break his Pac-12 season record of 120 set last year. Next up and sixth on the chart is Taj Gibson who had 100 in 2008-09. Jordan has a double-double in 10 games, after entering the season with five in his first three seasons. He also needs nine blocks to set the Pac-12 career mark held by Anthony Cook of Arizona (278 from 1985-89).
PAC-12 CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS
1. 278 – Anthony Cook (Arizona), ’85-89
2. 270 – Jordan Bachynski (Arizona State), ’10-present
NCAA LEADERS: Jordan Bachynski has a chance to lead the NCAA in blocks. Three Sun Devils have led the NCAA in official categories. Jeff Pendergraph shot 66 percent from the field in 2008-09, Ahlon Lewis averaged 9.19 assists in 1997-98 and Dick Daugherty shot 87.2 percent (75-of-86) from the free throw line in 1953-54. Radio analyst Kyle Dodd can lay claim to the unofficial NCAA record with a 4.73 assist-to-turnover ratio back in 2002-03 (104 assists and 22 turnovers), but the NCAA didn't officially start tracking the statistic until 2007-08.
GREAT ONES DIDN'T DO THIS: Jahii Carson averaged 18.5 points and 5.1 assists last season, the first freshman to do that since Chris McGuthrie of Mount St. Mary's in 1992-93 (19.8/.5.1).
BO KNOWS HOOPS LAST THREE GAMES: After transferring from Hawaii where he made a freshman school record 57 threes in 2010-11, last year Bo Barnes made four shots and had 13 total points in 11 games and 78 minutes. In the past four games he has played 82 minutes, is 11-of-19 (.579) from the field, 8-of-15 (.533) from three and averaging 9.3 points per game.
MARRIOTT POINTS: Games in opposing arenas have been a good thing for Jahii Carson, who has averaged 21.8 points in 17 true road games. His top six scoring games are all away from Tempe and he has averaged 21.4 points in 22 road/neutral games.
