TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State wrestling team dropped its dual with No. 25 Stanford, 22-10, on Monday night inside Wells Fargo Arena.
With the loss, the Sun Devils drop to 6-7 on the year and 1-1 in Pac-12 action, while the Cardinal improve to 14-4 and 2-1 in league competition.
“This just wasn’t our best night,” head coach Shawn Charles said. “Our guys came out and fought hard, but we lost in some positions that we shouldn’t have lost at. The guys are giving us everything they have, but it just wasn’t one of our best nights. We’ll go back to the wrestling room, look at some of our mistakes, and get better for the next match.”
ASU picked up their first win of the contest as Matt Kraus defeated Peter Russo in a 7-1 decision. Kraus has gone 3-1 in his last four matches.
At 157, the Sun Devils got a boost as Joel Smith picked up a 10-4 decision win over Bret Baumbach, cutting the Cardinal lead to 10-6.
ASU dropped its bouts at 165 and 174 before Blake Stauffer earned four team points with a 10-2 major decision over Zach Nevills at 184.
For the second time in two duals, Chace Eskam’s match was decided in overtime, and he was edged by Stanford’s Josh Marchok in a 7-5 decision.
Up next, ASU wrestling will honor their seniors and face their final home opponent of the 2014 season, Oregon State, on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. MT. The contest will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Oregon Networks.
