TEMPE, Ariz.—The No. 22 Arizona State women’s gymnastics team hosts instate rival 17th-ranked Arizona, Saturday, with the gymnastics point and the lead in the Territorial Cup® standings on the line. The meet, beginning at 4 p.m. MT, will also feature the Arizona State men’s gymnastics club team facing Washington in the teams’ annual co-ed meet.
The Sun Devils lead the series over the Wildcats in gymnastics with a head-to-head record of 30-12-1 since 1977. ASU last defeated Arizona in Tempe in 2011 by a score of 195.875-194.350, the team's first victory over the Wildcats in five years.
Referred to as surprising this season, the Gym Devils recorded their second score of 196 or better against BYU last Saturday. Topping the Cougars 196.200-194.525, ASU earned its highest team score since 2007, where the team also topped the 196 mark twice that season.
The team is not only hitting high marks, but also hitting them early in the season. The Gym Devils also scored above a 196 in January for the first time since 2006. The sport of gymnastics is known for its score creep through out the season. The fact the team is excelling early in the competition schedule bodes well for the future of the season.
The meet against the Wildcats will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks at 4 p.m. MT by Jim Watson and Amanda Pflugrad. The Sun Devils are also giving away two pairs of Beats by Dre headphones for fans in attendance.
