LAS VEGAS, Nev.--After a tough start to the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters the Arizona State men’s golf team bounced back and tied for the best second round score on Saturday. The Sun Devils were led by Jon Rahm who moved his way into a tie for 4th place heading into Sunday’s third and final round.
Rahm began the day in a tie for 26th but leaped 22 positions by shooting a 1-under par round of 71, the second lowest score on the day only to leader Patrick Rodgers of Stanford who shot -3. Rahm birdied four holes on the day and is in striking distance for Sunday, trailing by only four strokes with 18 holes to play.
The Sun Devils improved their score by 21 strokes in the second round, shooting a combined 297. Only Stanford, who sits in 2nd place, could match that mark. ASU’s mark Saturday moved it ahead of No. 3 ranked Georgia Tech and No. 4 ranked California.
Austin Quick also shot 1-under par for the Devils and moved himself into a tie for 16th after beginning the day in 40th. He eagled both holes 3 and 5, a par 5 and par 4 respectively. For the tournament he remains at 5-over par.
Broc Johnson shot a 5-over round of 77 and sits in a tie for 55th while Max Rottluff finished off the second round with a 78. Rottluff is in a tie for 66th.
