TUCSON, Ariz.—The Arizona State sand volleyball team edged Tulane, 3-2, on Friday in its opening match at the Wildcat Spring Challenge at the Arizona Sand Volleyball Courts.
ASU is now 2-1 on the year while Tulane falls to 1-2.
The Sun Devils picked up their first win of the day as No. 5 sophomore Andi Lowrance and junior Nora Tuioti-Mariner defeated Olivia Utt and Courtney Liddle, 21-14, 21-18.
After dropping the No. 3 match, the No. 2 pairing of sophomores Macey Gardner and Whitney Follette defeated Annie Shurtz and Grace Weaver in three sets. The Sun Devil tandem won the opening set, 21-15, before being edged in the second, 24-22 to tie things up at one set apiece. The tiebreaker set, which usually goes to 15 points, went all the way to 22-20 as Gardner and Follette fought to secure the win.
All tied up at two matches apiece, sophomore Bianca Arellano and senior Bethany Jorgensen also won their first set, defeating Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner, 21-16, before the Green Wave tandem took set two, 21-15. Arellano and Jorgensen battled through a tough third set before coming out on top, 17-15.
The Sun Devils will be back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT for their final match of the Wildcat Spring Challenge, a rematch with Arizona Christian.
