Berkeley -- It was a match that broke a handful of team and individual streaks, and a match that left Arizona State head coach Sheila McInerney "disappointed" by the end of the day.

That's all that could be said about the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devil's (16-3; Pac-12 3-1) women's tennis team being shut out at the hands of the Cal Golden Bears, 7-0, on Friday afternoon in Berkley, Calif.

"It was a tough one for us today," McInerney said. "Cal is a very good team, we needed to be at our best and unfortunately we were not."

Not being at their best by match-time ended up costing the Sun Devils in both singles and doubles play. Cal captured the doubles point to put Arizona State down to a quick one point deficit with wins on both the second and third courts in two quick sets.

Arziona State's Leighann Sahagun and Kassidy Jump were bested by Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr of Cal, 8-1, to start the afternoon. Shortly thereafter, Cal's Kelly Chui and Klara Fabikova defeated ASU's Joanna Smith and Stephanie Vlad, 8-2 on the third court, clinching the point.

At that point in time the match on the first court will still on-going, and played out until a tie at five all, with a match tiebreak following. Although Arizona State's Desirae Krawczyk and Alexandra Osborne were able to capture the point via tiebreak, it was too late to make an impact.

In singles, the Sun Devils faired just about the same, with each match only lasting two sets except for one which went to a third set tie-break because the overall match had already been clinched.

"I thought Cal played as well as we expected them to,  but we did not match their physicality or toughness," McInerney said.

Golden Bear Klara Fabikova topped Leighann Sahagun 6-2, 6-0 on the fourth court, No. 29 Denise Starr of Cal defeated No. 60 Stephanie Vlad 6-2, 6-1, and Cal's No. 78 Maegan Manasse bested Ebony Panoho in a tough first set, 7-5, and then again in the second, 6-1, to capture overall team points two, three and four and clinch the match for Cal.

From there, Arizona State's Desirae Krawczyk, ranked No. 81 in the country, had her sixteen match win streak on the No. 2 court snapped by Cal's Anett Schutting 6-1, 6-4. Schutting was ranked fifty-one spots higher than Krawczyk, at No. 30.

Arizona State junior Joanna Smith put up a tough fight for Arizona State on the No. 6 court, taking Alice Duranteau of Cal to an abbreviated third set match tiebreak after falling 6-2 in the first set, and then battling back to win 5-7 in the second. The shortened tiebreak wasn't enough time for Smith to catch up however --  she fell 1-0 giving Cal the point.

Finishing off the day for the Sun Devils was freshman Kassidy Jump on the third court. Although she was unable to capture the "w" for her team, Jump put up a very competitive match against her opponent, No. 14 Zsofi Susanyi 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The loss is only the third of the season for Arizona State, who experienced defeat for the last time just over a month and a half ago to Pepperdine University. ASU will continue on with their California weekend of play tomorrow, when they take on No. 5 Stanford at 12 p.m. MDT in Stanford, Calif.
