SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The No. 28 Arizona State men’s golf team capped off the first two rounds of the 68th Annual Western Intercollegiate from Santa Cruz, Calif. Saturday. After 36 holes the Sun Devils hold on to an 8th place position after a tough second round.

A trio of Pac-12 schools take up the top three spots thus far, as Stanford (-4) leads Washington (+2) and Cal (+4).

ASU shot a combined 4-over through round one, but struggled during the back end of the day and shot 15-over as a team. The team’s 19-over mark has it sitting in 8th place heading into Sunday’s final round.

So far, Austin Quick has led the way to this point. Quick continues to post low rounds in comparison to the field, and has had a string of impressive performances of late which has ensured him some recognition as one of Arizona State’s most consistent golfers. Quick shot a first round score of even-par 70, and finished out the day with a 3-over 73. Most golfers in the field dropped strokes in the second round from their first round scores. Quick’s 3-over through 36 holes has him in a tie for 25th.

Blake Cannon shot 2-over 72 in both rounds Saturday, and one stroke behind his teammate, Quick, rests in a tie for 34th. Cannon failed to birdie on the day, but did sink an eagle on the par-5 9th hole in the second round.

Tied for 44th at 5-over par are Broc Johnson and Max Rottluff who both had one impressive round to go with a sub-par round. Johnson began the day with a 1-under round of 69 that had him in a tie for 10th, but followed that up with a round of 6-over. Rottluff had the reverse fortune. Beginning the day with a first round score of 5-over par 75, he went on to close out the second round with an even-par 70.

Rounding out the field for Arizona State is Nicolo Galletti and No. 9 ranked Jon Rahm, who are tied for 53rd. Galletti shot rounds of 4-over and 3-over, resulting in a 36-hole score of 7-over. Rahm’s 7-over is the surprising note for ASU, as Rahm is coming off 1st and 2nd place finishes in his last two tournaments. After shooting even-par 70 in the first round, Rahm struggled to find the same groove and posted a 7-over 77 in round two.

The Western Collegiate will wrap up after Sunday’s third round which tees off at 8:30 a.m. PT.
