ASU Water Polo Drops Semifinal Contest to No. 2 UCLA, 10-7

LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 Arizona State University water polo team fell to No. 2 UCLA, 10-7, in the semifinals of the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday in Los Angeles.

The Sun Devils fell into an early 6-1 hole in the first period and were unable to rebound in the second half to cut the gap.

Ao Gao had two goals in the game while Anna Kertes, Liz Kreek, Alkistis Benekou, Izabella Chiappini and Kate Enoka each scoring goals in the contest. 

E.B. Keeve finished with nine saves in the game. 

The second period of the game proved to be ASU’s undoing as the Sun Devils were outscored 4-1 in the frame and didn’t find the back of the net until less than a minute was remaining in the half.

Trailing 6-2 at halftime, the Sun Devils outscored UCLA 5-4 in the second half but were unable to cut the gap to closer than three goals.

The Sun Devils will compete in the consolation final tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. PT against the loser of the Stanford and Cal game later today.
