TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State softball team executed the series sweep of the visiting Southern Miss with a 5-0 win on Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
With the win, ASU improves to 42-7 while Southern Miss drops to 22-28 on the year.
Pitcher Mackenzie Popescue (20-1) got the win in the circle for the Sun Devils, while Samantha Robles (6-13) was tabbed with the loss for the Golden Eagles. This marks Popescue’s second shutout of the weekend as she threw a no-hitter in ASU’s 8-0 win over USM on Friday night.
ASU got on the board in the third inning as shortstop Cheyenne Coyle hit her 10th home run of the year, a two-RBI liner over the left field fence to score right fielder Bailey Wigness, who reached on an infield single to start off the frame.
Wigness had two hits on the day and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases, improving her total to a team-best 12-for-13 on the season.
The Sun Devils tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, the first from third baseman Haley Steele, who led off the inning with a home run down the left field line.
Second baseman Chelsea Gonzales reached on a one-out fielder’s choice, and was eventually scored by catcher Katee Aguiree, who recorded her first triple of the year down the right field line to put ASU up, 4-0. ASU’s last run of the game came as Wigness hit a hard RBI single that glanced off of the Southern Miss third baseman’s glove.
Up next ASU will resume the Pac-12 Conference schedule with a three-game series at Oregon, May 2-4. Friday’s series opener is set for a 5 p.m. PT first pitch and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks, as will Sunday’s 2 p.m. PT finale.
