LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 Arizona State University water polo team matched a program best with a fourth-place finish at the 2014 MPSF Championships following a tough 8-7 sudden victory loss to No. 5 California in the consolation final in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Cal’s Dora Antal found the back of the net with 2:29 left in the golden goal period to seal the deal for Cal and deal the Sun Devils a one-goal loss two weeks after ASU knocked off Cal by a goal in the final game of the regular season.

With the loss, ASU took fourth at the tournament for the second consecutive season and will now await its fate as far as a bid the NCAA Championships, with the bids being announced tomorrow.

Izabella Chiappini had two goals for the Sun Devils and was the only player to score twice for ASU.  Daisy Carter, Annie Kertes, Liz Kreek, Ao Gao and Kate Enoka all also scored for the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils did most of their damage with a man advantage, scoring six goals on 15 Cal exclusions in a very physical game that also saw ASU pick up 12 kickouts but the Sun Devils limited the Golden Bears to just four goals on those chances.

Neither team could get any offense going in the first half with Cal taking a 2-1 lead into halftime and ASU not getting on the board until there was just 59 seconds left in the second period on Chiappini’s first goal of the game.

The pace of the game picked up substantially in the second half as Gao evened things up at two to open the third period. Cal would answer with three straight goals to take a 5-2 advantage to set up a frantic fourth quarter for ASU.

ASU outscored Cal 4-1 in the fourth and tied the game with four seconds remaining in the game on Enoka’s goal to force overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime session, ASU drew first blood on Chiappini’s second Kertes goal for a 7-6 advantage and ASU’s first lead of the game but Cal answered 38 seconds later with a minute remaining to force the sudden victory frame.

E.B. Keeve continued her exceptional season in the cage as she finished with 16 saves and did all she could to keep the Sun Devils in the game despite the offensive struggles.

The Sun Devils are now 15-10 on the season and will await the NCAA Championship fate tomorrow with the selection show scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
