TEMPE -- Six members of the Arizona State softball team were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Team, the organization announced on Thursday.

Seniors Dallas Escobedo and Mackenzie Popescue swept the West Region First-Team pitching honors, while junior catcher Amber Freeman was also named to the first-team.

Escobedo has been a driving force for the Sun Devils all season long with 22 wins and an ERA of 1.85.  She has 310 strikeouts this season, a total that is third nationally and her 1,196 career strikeouts at 40th in NCAA history.

Freeman currently leads the team in hits (67), slugging percentage (.696), and batting average (.424), which is the seventh-best batting average in ASU single-season history.

In her final season with the Sun Devils, Popescue has a record of 20-3 and an ERA of 2.15.

Junior third baseman Haley Steele, senior shortstop Cheyenne Coyle, and senior outfielder Bailey Wigness were also recognized on the NFCA West Region Third-Team.

Steele has become ASU’s go-to power hitter this season alongside Freeman, as she leads the team in RBIs (47), is tied for second in home runs (11), and has a slugging percentage of .600.

Coyle has a career total of 32 homers at ASU (12th in program history), despite playing just two seasons for the Sun Devils while Wigness is wrapping up her time at ASU with a with a current career batting average of .375, which would be good for fifth in ASU history should the season end today

This marks the fourth consecutive year that ASU has recorded six nominees to the All-Region teams. All six selections were also honored on the Pac-12 All-Conference teams yesterday.

Escobedo is the first Sun Devil with four-career All-Region honors since outfielder Kaitlin Cochran was honored in each of the 2006-09 seasons. Popescue, Freeman, Steele, Wigness, and Coyle each picked up their second career All-Region honor.

The All-Region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region and all honorees are now eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-American teams.

ASU is all set to make their 26th appearance in the NCAA Softball Tournament, hosting the Tempe Regional, May 16-18 at Farrington Stadium. All games will be broadcast live on television via ESPNU.
