Arizona State Quotes

Dallas Escobedo

On struggling in the first inning:

“They just made good contact. The one hit to Hayley (Steele) was hit really hard. The other hits were hit were nobody was at. Being able to just shake it off and go right after them was big.”

On facing one of the country’s best hitters in Sierra Romero:

“I have heard a lot about her all over the media. Just being able to stick with my game. Throw right at her. She did get one hit off of me. I am going to stick to my plan, I am not going to adjust to someone that is doing great. I am doing great too so I might as well stick to what I am doing.”

On motivation after being eliminated by Michigan last season:

“I mean I’m happy it wasn’t at midnight, so that’s a little bit different. But that’s definitely in the back of your mind. We had beaten them earlier this year and that was nice. After losing to them in the World Series last year and beating them earlier this year, we had that under our belts. We came out this game knowing that they are a good team and what they’re capable of but at the same time just sort of sticking to our game plan.”

On how the team has set themselves up for tomorrow:

“It’s exciting. Being able to keep on playing and being in the heat is great and it feels great being able to play great teams to prepare us for the chance to move ahead (talking about potentially hosting a super regional) is nice. I think everyone is excited to be at home, really.”

Craig Nicholson

On the approach at the plate:

“Our approach today was to work to stay inside the ball. We made some adjusments in the middle of the game and most of our righties got off the plate a little bit. We may have been a little over aggressive early on. But I think that we did a better job second time through the order making sure that even though we made an adjustment, we still got a pitch to go with the adjustment.”

On the decision to pitch Dallas Escobedo two days in a row:

“Both pitchers have been a big part of getting us to where we are at right now. When it comes down to it Dallas (Escobedo) is the person that, in my opinion, gives us a great opportunity to win against a good ball club. She wants the ball in the postseason and I am going to give her the ball.”

On playing in the heat:

It could be. It could possibly be. But just to add on to what Dallas was saying, we won’t come out tomorrow thinking about how they’ll have to beat us twice. We’ll come out in the first game and immediately focus on getting after it. We will know in the back of our minds that (having to lose twice to be eliminated) is there if it’s needed, but we don’t want to even go there. We want to win the first game.

Michigan Quotes

Statement by Head Coach Carol Hutchins

“Good game by Arizona State Congrats to them.  I thought we knew coming in, We know Dallas is a great pitcher and that they’re a great team.  The only way you’re going to beat them is by attacking them, ever pitch of the game.  And I thought we came out attacking.  And I didn’t think we did it after the first inning very well.  We did not attack.  We did not attack the hit-able pitches.  You know, our defense kept us in the game, but they took advantage of a leadoff free pass, you know, the wheels fell off a bit, and we threw a pitch over the middle of the plate.  And that’s the game, it was one inning, we had one good inning, they had one good inning.”

Coach Hutchins on offense, and Escobedo’s adjustments.

“Well you know I think the first inning is a good time to get after a pitcher, everybody is settling into the game, but she certainly adjusted.  But again, I think, I always certainly can look at the view from out viewpoint, where what I think we can do, and I thought when she (Escobedo) brought it over the plate we needed to get after it. “

Sierra Romero on how Dallas Escobedo compares to other pitchers she has faced

“She’s a great pitcher, she hits her sports, and that’s really it, she’s a good pitcher and she competes.”

Romero on her outfield hit

“I was just going to my half-swing I recognized it was an inside pitch, I knew I had to get my hands extended to it and I was able to get it into the outfield.”

Hailey Wagner on this point forward

“Keep fighting, keep attacking, we are still in the tournament right now and that’s all that matters, and I trust my team and I believe in my team. And I know we are going to come out next game and attack”
