TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State gymnastics coach René Lyst announces the hire of former Kent State assistant coach Craig Ballard as an assistant coach on the Sun Devil gymnastics staff.
“I’ve been able to watch, first hand, Craig develop into an outstanding collegiate coach,” said Lyst. “I have worked with him at camps and have recruited with him while at different programs on a regular basis. He is what I call a ‘gymnastics junkie’.”
Ballard joins the Sun Devils after three seasons at Kent State, where in 2013 the Flashes went undefeated in the Mid-American Conference en route to winning the regular-season conference title.
“He knows everyone out there and is non-stop learning and emerging himself in the sport,” said Lyst. “He has a great grasp of the sport, knows how to coach effectively, and is a great administrator, as well.”
At Kent State, Ballard served as the primary vault coach, leading gymnast Rachel Goldenberg to a MAC Specialist of the Year Honor. Prior to Kent State, Ballard spent three seasons at Bowling Green working as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
“Craig, Jeff [Hunt] and I are so excited to bring in the next chapter of Sun Devil Gymnastics,” said Lyst. “Our synergy is already outstanding and each of us sees the potential to be one of the top programs in the country. We are all humbled to have this amazing opportunity here at Arizona State.”
