Two Eagles - No Shock There - Lead Jon Rahm To Amateur Match Win
Courtesy: Sun Devil Athletics
Not only falling three holes down but doing it quickly (through five holes), Rahm didn’t lose another and won every other hole from that point on to win 3-and-2 over Hossler. Included in those six holes were eagles on the 440-yard, par-4 10th hole and the 549-yard, par-5 12th hole. Rahm birdied No. 14 and No. 16 to seal the deal. Eagles are nothing new to Rahm, who has notched 21 of them in his collegiate career, including a nation’s best 12 last year.
Rahm was one of five players in the field who improved by at least six strokes to move on to match play. He had a 75 on Monday, but came back with a 69 in round two to finish tied for 43rd. He had five birdies on Tuesday in round two, overcoming two double bogeys on Monday to advance.
Rahm will continue his quest to become the first Sun Devil to win the U.S. Amateur since Jeff Quinney in 2000 when he tees it against Rico Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. (ET). Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches are scheduled for Thursday, and the quarterfinal matches will be played on Friday, Aug. 15. The semifinals are set for Saturday, Aug. 16 and the 36-hole championship match is slated for Sunday, Aug. 17.
Golf Channel will provide coverage Thursday, Aug. 14 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) and Friday, Aug. 15 (8:30-10:30 p.m.). NBC will air coverage of the semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 16 (4-6 p.m.) and the championship match on Sunday, Aug. 17 (4-6 p.m.).
Rahm, who will be a junior at Arizona State next season with two honorable mention All-America honors in his possession, won the Spanish Amateur earlier this summer by shooting a 5-under 276 that included a 7-under 64 in the final round after starting with a 73 in the first round (with Sun Devil teammate Ben Shur as his caddie) In late June. Rahm also clinched the Palmer Cup for Europe with a 4 and 2 victory against Wyndham Clark, continuing the strong tradition of Sun Devils playing well in the match play event.
