GLENDALE, Ariz.– In the end, it wasn’t about the 5-2 final score. The Sun Devils fell in their season finale Sunday night to the US National Team Development Program U-18 squad at Gila River Arena.
But it was mostly about the seniors.
"Those kids will be alumni of the program and will be celebrated as kids that helped build the foundation to help us get here,” head coach Greg Powers said.
Four seniors – Liam Norris, Jordan Young, Garrett Peterson and Eric Rivard – played their final game as Sun Devils Sunday. All three have been with the program for a different length of time. Norris played five years as a graduate senior with the ACHA team, Young four, Rivard three and Peterson came over as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame.
But they all felt the importance of senior night.
"It just hasn’t really hit me yet that I am done," Norris said. "It will take a couple weeks for me to clean out the locker and we will see how it feels then.”
Norris capped his Sun Devil career with the team’s first goal of the night, swatting a puck out of midair to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 7:05 mark of the first period. Ryan Ostertag scored the other goal for ASU, also collecting an assist on the night.
Now eyes turn to the future. And Peterson sees a bright future.
"This is just the start, this is the foundation," he said. "The sky is the limit.”
