TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Baseball junior catcher Brian Serven has been named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation’s top catcher, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Tuesday.

Serven, who was one of 20 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award in 2015, is one of five Pac-12 catchers on this year’s watch list. He has caught 11 runners stealing base this season, which leads all Power Five conference catchers, and his career total of 43 is more than any Sun Devil since 2009. He has a .325 batting average and .450 slugging percentage with 13 hits, six RBI and six runs scored in 10 starts.

Serven is looking to join Don Wakamatsu (1983-85), Tuffy Gosewisch (2003-05) and Petey Paramore (2006-08) as the only players in school history to serve as the primary catcher in three consecutive seasons. Serven is already in elite company as one of only three catchers in ASU history, along with Jerry Mantlo (1970-71) and Paramore (2006-07), to start the majority of their freshmen and sophomore seasons behind the plate. In 2014 he became just the third true freshmen catcher in the past 20 years at ASU to start the majority of the season, joining Petey Paramore in 2006 and Trent Pratt in 1999.

The watch list will be narrowed down to 20 semifinalists, announced May 18, and a national voting panel at the end of May will vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30.
