RANCHO SANTA FE -- Through day one of the San Diego State March Mayhem tournament, the Arizona State women's golf team is still dancing and on the winning side of the bracket.
The No. 13 Sun Devils, who were given the No. 5 seed in the match-play tournament, defeated 12-seed UC-Davis with the first three victories to win 3-0 in the best-of-five format. While the Devils advanced to the second round to face 4-seed Stanford, play was suspended until Tuesday morning due to darkness.
ASU and Stanford were between holes 12 and 16 with the Cardinal leading 3-2. Round two will continue at 7:45 a.m. PT, and round three starting no sooner than 9 a.m. PT.
In the first round, freshman Linnea Strom defeated Ally Zeng, going up eight by the 11th hole with just seven holes to play.
Junior Monica Vaughn continued her stellar play, clinching her match point by the 13th hole, 6 & 5. Her round included an eagle on the short par-4 sixth.
Sophomore Sophia Zeeb played cat and mouse with Samantha Hutchinson of UC Davis, but went one-up on the second hole and never looked back. She held her lead through the 17th hole where she clinched the deciding point for the Devils.
The second and third rounds can be followed on Birdiefire.com here as the Devils look to come from behind down the stretch against Stanford.
