TEMPE, Ariz. - The preseason Amway Coaches Poll, presented by USA Today, was released Thursday, July 31 and for the first time since 2008, Arizona State found a place in it. The 2014 edition has the Sun Devils ranked 18th, a few spots ahead of where they finished last season at No. 20.
The Sun Devil football program has been ranked six times in the preseason Coaches Poll since 1998, including most recently 16th in 2008. The highest a Sun Devil football team has been ranked in the preseason in the past 16 years was ninth in 1998.
Sun Devil Stadium will play host to three teams ranked ahead of ASU, including No. 7 UCLA (Sept. 25), No. 11 Stanford (Oct. 18), and No. 17 Notre Dame (Nov. 8). The Sun Devils will also play on the road against No. 15 USC (Oct. 4) and No. 25 Washington (Oct. 25). The highest ranked Pac-12 team is Oregon at No. 4. The Pac-12 had six teams ranked in the poll, the second most teams of any conference.
ASU is one of only seven ranked teams to play five or more opponents ranked in the Preseason Top 25. Auburn leads the way with seven opposing teams in the poll, while UCLA and Stanford each play six.
The Sun Devils climbed as high as 13th in the Coaches Poll last season. ASU was ranked for a total of nine weeks in 2013-14, including the last seven weeks of the season. ASU has finished the season ranked in the Top 25 of the Coaches Poll 16 times since the poll started in 1950.
The team begins fall practice Fri., Aug.1, and their campaign to defend their Pac-12 South championship begins inside Sun Devil Stadium on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. vs. Weber State.
