TEMPE – The U.S. Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced recently the individuals an teams that have earned academic honors, a list that includes one individual Arizona State University student-athlete and both Sun Devil cross country teams. Ben Engelhardt earned the national academic distinction from the Association while ASU’s men and women also earned recognition for their academic success as a team throughout the 2010 season.
Engelhardt, who earned his fourth academic honor from the Pac-10 in the fall as a member of the Academic All-Pac-10 First Team, earned his first nationally academic honor from the USTFCCCA. An individual qualifier for the NCAA Cross Country Championships where he placed 51st overall, Engelhardt’s selection for the cross country academic honor is just the second in the history of the men’s program after Brandon Bethke was honored at the end of the 2009 season.
As a team, both the men and women carried a cumulative 3.00 grade-point average and were honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic teams. The selection for the women is their eighth all-time and their first since the 2007 season while the men were honored for the second year in a row and their third time overall. Combined with the track and field program’s honors, the Sun Devil women have been honored by the USTFCCCA 14 times for the women and four times.
