ABOUT THE FIGHTING TIGERS -- The Fighting Tigers are 3-0 overall, 0-0 SEC and are playing Southeastern La. tonight before this weekend's matchup ... they are coached by Skip Bertman(16 seasons) ... the Fighting Tigers finished 41-24-1 overall, 18-11-1 in the SEC in 1999 ... they return six of nine starters including Jeremy Witten (.330-8-46) and Blair Barbier (.293-13-51) ... this will be the first meeting between the two teams ... the LSU pitching staff currently has a stellar 1.67 ERA with 20 strikeouts through three games.

keeping up with the Joneses -- Senior Mitch Jones has made his presence felt in the early part of the season. The Utah native has nine homeruns in 13 game and has hit a homer in his last four games. Of his 17 hits, 11 have been for extra bases. He leads the team in total bases (47)and slugging percentage (.904). His 18 RBI is second on the squad and he is hitting .444 with the bases empty. He is currently on a 12-game hitting streak.

PHELPS LEADING THE WAY -- Junior infielder Jeff Phelps has been a model of consistency in 2000. He is batting at a .458 clip through 13 games and leads the team with 22 hits. He has tallied seven multiple hit games as well as scoring 11 runs. Phelps has been hitting well against both lefties and righthanded pitchers (.455 vs. left and .459 vs. right). He is also batting .500 with runners in scoring position and has notched a team-leading seven 2-out RBIs. Phelps is on a six-game hitting streak.

CASEY at bat -- Junior Casey Myers (Casa Grande) returns as the Devils leading RBI with 51 in 1999. He has seen time as a catcher and first baseman in 2000. Myers was also a 1999 GTE Academic All-American (first-team). He is a double major with a 4.0 GPA in math and economics.

TEXAS LEFTY SOLID THrough four starts -- Arizona State's Jon Switzer (Houston, Tx.) has gotten off to a 3-0 start in 2000 and looks to improve on that mark this weekend. The lefty lowered his ERA to 1.04 with another solid perfomrance on the mound this weekend. Switzer went 7.0 innings allowing only two hits while striking out six. He is holding opponent batters to a .167 average at the plate and has been especially effective against lefthanded batters holding them to a .136 average. Switzer, a 1999 Freshman All-American (HM) leads the pitching staff in IP (26.0), strikouts (24) and has only issued four walks during that time.

Martin says aloha -- Newcomer Jonah Martin (Wainae, Hi.) has been an effective leadoff hitter for the Devils in 2000. Batting at a .370 clip, he is tied for third on the team in hits (17) and has been hit by a pitch a team-leading eight times. His on-base percentage comes in at .491. The JC transfer is batting .500 from the leadoff position and .429 with runners on base. He is batting .429 vs. lefties and has recorded five multiple-hit games this season.

AIN'T LOVE GRAND -- Righthanded pitcher Luke Field (Littleton, Co.) proposed to his girlfriend in a very unique way over the holidays. On New Year's Eve, Field and his girlfriend, Casse Watkins (Ellinwood, Kan.), went to Packard Stadium. None of the stadium lights were on as they made their way to the press box. Field had made arrangement with a manager to be there. When the couple got to the press box, the manager turned on the field lights. Spelled out in bats and baseballs were the words "Will you marry me?". Field's girlfriend said yes. No date has been set yet.

TWO-SPORT ATHLETE? -- A little known fact around the ballpark is that centerfielder Jeff Duncan is a big hockey fan. The native of Illinois played hockey as a kid growing up all the way through high school. What position you ask? Center, of course.
