TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's cross country team culminated a successful 2000 season with a No. 24 ranking in the final MONDO Men's Cross Country Poll released today.

Despite being overlooked as an at-large selection for the NCAA Championships, ASU wraps up a campaign which saw the Sun Devils place fifth at last weekend's NCAA West Regionals and fourth at the Pac-10 Championships Oct. 28. The men also put together an impressive sixth-place showing at the Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 23. The Sun Devils, jumping back into the Top-25 after being absent in the last two polls, opened the season ranked as high as 11th.

ASU's fifth-place finish at Fresno State matched the second-highest regional finish in the history of the men's program set in 1984. Placing in the top-25 and earning all-region honors were sophomore Kris Alexander (19th), senior Garrett Jensen (21st) and freshman Juan Reyes (17th). For good measure, the Sun Devils matched their best conference finish in school history at the Pac-10 Championships as well.

Bright spots for ASU this year included the performances of Jensen and Reyes. Both harriers traded spots as the Sun Devils' high individual finishers at the major meets. Jensen led ASU with a fifth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational, a 56th-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational Oct. 14, and a 15th-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships. Reyes was the highest ASU finisher in his first collegiate meet, finishing ninth at the UC Irvine Invitational Sept. 9. Then, in what turned out to be the Sun Devils' final race of the season, Reyes led the men with a 17th place finish at regionals.
