Eight Sun Devils Selected In 2007 MLB Draft

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eight members of the Arizona State baseball team heard their names called during the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, including Eric Sogard, who was a second round pick of the San Diego Padres. Arizona State leads all schools with 352 draft picks since the first year of the draft in 1965.

Sogard was the first Sun Devil chosen, going the second round, 81st overall, to the San Diego Padres. Sogard was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and eanred All-American status from Collegiate Baseball. He was undrafted out of Thunderbird High School in Phoenix.

Matt Spencer went to the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round, 113th overall. Spencer earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors this season, and was a 24th round pick out of high school.

Andrew Romine was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the fifth round, 178th overall. Romine earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors this season as well. He had previously been drafted in the 36th round coming out of high school.

Tim Smith went in the seventh round by the Texas Rangers, going 230th overall. Smith, who was Honorable Mention All-Pac-10, was drafted for the third time. He was previously taken in the 21st round in 2004 and the 17th round in 2005.

Brian Flores, who was Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 this season, was taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 13th round, 395th overall. It was the third time Flores has been drafted, as he was taken in the 21st round in 2004 and the 37th round in 2005.

Scott Mueller was taken #639 overall (21st round) by the Baltimore Orioles. Mueller had been taken in the 41st round in 2004 and 37th round in 2005.

All-American and All-Pac-10 pitcher Josh Satow was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 28th round, 855th overall. Satow was undrafted out of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale.

Mike Jones, who doubles as a wide receiver on the Sun Devil football team, was selected in the 42nd round (1,265th overall) by the Chicago White Sox.
