TEMPE, Ariz. - Coming off one of their best meet showings under head coach Walt Drenth, the Arizona State women's cross country squad sky-rocketed to fourth from 14th in this week's FinishLynx NCAA Div. I Cross Country Poll.

Led by a fifth-place individual finish by junior Lisa Aguilera (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial HS), the Sun Devil women placed fourth at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational at Iowa State Saturday, Oct. 14, the major preview -meet for the NCAA Championships Nov. 20.

The highest national ranking ever for an ASU women's team is third, a spot achieved by last year's squad after opening the1999 campaign with two straight meet victories at the UC Irvine Invitational and the Roy Griak Invitational.

So far this season, the ASU women's squad has not finished a race lower than fourth, including a third place finish at the highly competitive Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 23 and a meet title by the Sun Devil "B" team at the ASU Invitational Oct. 6. For good measure, the women have not been ranked lower than No. 14 this season, despite racing their "B" teams in two of five meets thus far.

With just over one week remaining until the Pac-10 Championships in Seattle, Wash., Oct. 28, the Sun Devils will host the ASU Open Friday, Oct. 20 at Freestone Park in Gilbert, Ariz. ASU, which will race its reserves, will host "B" teams from Arizona and Northern Arizona, as well as a mix of local junior colleges. The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 4:30 p.m., while the men's 8,000-meter race will follow at 5 p.m.
