TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State baseball players Steve Garrabrants and Rod Allen were named the co-winners of the Castleberry Coaches Award for their hard work, hustle and team attitude during the summer they spent with the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Allen and Garrabrants, who join recent Sun Devils Drew Friedberg, Jeff Duncan, Mitch Jones, Scott Goodman and Ryan Schroyer to play in the prestigious wood bat Cape Cod League in past years, blossomed into team favorites throughout the summer. Garrabrants started at second base, and while he struggled with a .178 average in the regular season, led all players in the playoffs with two home runs and was fifth with a .235 average. Allen played primarily center field for the Cardinals, hitting .254 with two home runs in the regular season. The Cardinals fell to the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod Championship.
In other news involving Sun Devil players in summer baseball, relief pitcher Ryan Schroyer helped lead the Alaska Goldpanners to the NBC (National Baseball Congress) World Series Championship held in Wichita, Kansas. Schroyer, a junior-to-be who led the Sun Devils with eight saves last year and a Pac-10 best 2.37 ERA. Schroyer dominated the Alaskan League circuit this summer, going 1-0 with six saves and a 0.00 ERA in 17.2 innings of work with the Goldpanners.
