Carlota Ciganda (Women's Golf) and Mike Leake, Jr. (Baseball) have been named ASU's Athletes of the Week, for the week ending May 2nd. Ciganda earned Pac-10 Individual honors while Leake grabs his seventh career complete game.
The freshman Ciganda took medalist honors at the 2009 Pacific-10 Women's Golf Championships after winning a playoff over teammate Jennifer Osborn and USC's Jennifer Song. The Spaniard chipped in for par to earn the individual conference crown and her first collegiate win. Ciganda became the Sun Devils' first conference medalist since Louise Stahle in 2005. Stahle was also a freshman. The Sun Devils had not won the Pac-10 Championship and had a tournament medalist since 1995 when Wendy Ward led the Sun Devils to their fifth Pac-10 Championship. ASU went on to win the NCAA Championships that year.
Ciganda shot a 3-under 210 (70-71-69) en route to her medalist honors. Over the course of the tournament, Ciganda knocked in eight birdies with four of those being in the final round.
Leake was once again magnificent, recording his seventh career complete game, third this season, in a 3-1 win in the opener of the Cal series. Leake picked up his 10th win of the year, allowing only one run on five hits while fanning 7. The Golden Bears hit only .167 off of Leake, who earned double digit victories for the third straight season. Leake joins Eddie Bane as the only Sun Devils to ever win 10+ games in three straight seasons.
