Oct. 8, 2002

The season ended sooner than the Mariners wanted, but the final 30 games gave them a good look at some players who could fit into the 25-man roster in 2003. One of them was Willie Bloomquist, an erstwhile middle infielder who learned to play the outfield for Triple-A Tacoma this past season. The third-round draft choice from Port Orchard, Wash., was among the September callups and made a terrific impression on manager Lou Piniella and the Mariners' coaching staff.

Bloomquist, who batted .455 (15-for-33 with four doubles and seven RBIs) sat down with MLB.com on the final day of the season to reflect on the month that earned him a place on the team heading into Spring Training.

MLB.com: How would you describe the month of September 2002?

Bloomquist: Exciting is the best way to sum it up. From the first day I was called up, on Sept. 1, until the end, it was exciting. It has been a wave, and I have been on top the wave. Being in the middle of a pennant race was a lot of fun, and coming back the way we did during the final homestand at SAFECO Field was just a blast. It is a month I'll never forget.
