ASU's last win at Packard vs. Florida State came in 1995.

Mr. Jones -- Senior Mitch Jones has made his presence felt in the early part of the season. The Utah native has five homeruns in seven games. Of his nine hits, seven have been for extra bases. He leads the team in total bases (27), slugging percentage (1.038), runs scored (12) and walks (6). His 10 RBI is tied for the lead on the squad.

PHELPS LEADING THE WAY -- Junior infielder Jeff Phelps has been a model of consistency in 2000. He is batting at a .440 clip through seven games and leads the team with 11 hits. He has tallied three multiple hit games as well as scoring eight runs (third on the squad). Phelps has been playing at both of the corner infield positions with success, having commmited only one error in 35 chances.

CASEY at bat -- Junior Casey Myers (Casa Grande) returns as the Devils leading RBI with 51 in 1999. He has seen time as a catcher and first baseman in 2000. Myers has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week three times (twice as a freshman and once as a sophomore). He is currently on a six-game hitting streak and is tied for third on the team with nine RBI. He hit .462 over the weekend raising his batting average almost 60 points. Myers was also a 2000 GTE Academic All-American (first-team). He is a double major with a 4.0 GPA in math and economics.

around the bullpen -- It was a pretty good weekend for the Sun Devil bullpen with three relievers recording saves. Freshman Dennis Sarfate picked up his first save of the season going 4.0 shutout innings against FAU (1/28), allowing only one hit while striking out seven. The very next day, junior Drew Friedberg pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts to pick up a save. In ASU's 3-2 victory on Sunday, reliever Luke Field pitched 2.0 shutout innings with four K's to preserve the win.ASU relievers have recorded 41 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched this year.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW -- Gone are names like Willie Bloomquist and Andrew Beinbeink. Say hello to Mike Lopez, Dennis Wyrick and Jonah Martin. Lopez (Yavapai) will anchor the infield from third base while Wyrick (Azusa, Calif.) will field the ball from shortstop. Martin (Waianae, Hi.) will patrol rightfield for the Devils. Lopez, who redshirted in '99, comes to ASU via Yavapai CC while Martin transferred from L.A. City JC. Wyrick, a true freshman, was a two-time San Gabriel Valley Player of the Year selection. All three have looked impressive in the early going. Lopez is batting .385 while Wyrick comes in at .435. Wyrick is second on the squad with 10 hits and leads the team in 2-out RBI with four on the year. Martin has three stolen bases and has been perfect in the field.

AIN'T LOVE GRAND -- Righthanded pitcher Luke Field (Littleton, Co.) proposed to his girlfriend in a very unique way over the holidays. On New Year's Eve, Field and his girlfriend, Casse Watkins (Ellinwood, Kan.), went to Packard Stadium. None of the stadium lights were on as they made their way to the press box. Field had made arrangement with a manager to be there. When the couple got to the press box, the manager turned on the field lights. Spelled out in bats and baseballs were the words "Will you marry me". Field's girlfriend said yes. No date has been set yet.

TWO-SPORT ATHLETE? A little known fact around the ballpark is that centerfielder Jeff Duncan is a big hockey fan. The native of Illinois played hockey as a kid growing up all the way through high school. What position you ask? Center, of course.
