Members of Arizona State University’s water polo team saw action at the 10th FINA World Women’s Junior Championships. The tournament was held from August 19through August 25 in Volos, Greece.
Incoming freshman Izzabella Chiappini was a standout player in the tournament, netting 16 goals in five games, as she helped her Brazil National team advance as far as the quarterfinal round, where she scored three goals in a 10-5 win vs. Kazakhstan.
Current sophomore Kate Enoka stayed off the stats sheet during the early stages of her New Zealand teams’ campaign, however, she was able to finish strong, netting 8 goals in the final four games, half of which came in the final game alone, a 9-12 semifinal round loss to Canada.
It was an eventful homecoming for Arizona State incoming freshman Alkistis Benekou, who contributed with three goals for her Greece team. The team was able to make it to medal round and earned a bronze medal following a 7-6 victory over Russia.
All three individuals are expected to have an immediate impact this season on a Sun Devil team coming off its best year in program history under head coach Todd Clapper.
