SAN DIEGO – The No. 10 Arizona State University water polo team took third overall in the UCSD Triton Invitational on Sunday, knocking off No. 11 Loyola Marymount in the consolation final after falling to No. 1 USC in the semifinals.

The Sun Devils improved to 6-3 on the season after going 3-1 on the weekend with all three victories coming against teams ranked in the top-20 of the CWPA Coaches Poll.

Arizona State will have a weekend off before returning to action at the UC Irvine Tournament in Irvine, Calif., beginning Feb. 22 in Irvine, Calif.

Complete recaps from today’s action are below.

ASU 12, LMU 7

After being held scoreless against USC earlier in the day, freshman Alkistis Benekou got back to doing what she’s done best all season – score goals.

Benekou logged four goals – two in the decisive second quarter – and the Sun Devils knocked off No. 11 Loyola Marymount to take third at the Triton Invitational.

E.B. Keeve had 12 saves in the contest as she continued her trend of double-digit saves while she received help on the offensive end from Benekou in addition to multi-goal efforts from Izabella Chiappini and Liz Kreek.

Leading 3-1 after the first quarter, the Sun Devils outscored LMU 6-2 in the second to take a 9-3 lead into the break that they would never relinquish.

Kreek and Chiappini each added two goals while Annie Kertes, Petra Pardi, Ao Gao and Abbey Kerth each found the back of the net as well.

Chiappini capped off a weekend that saw her score multiple goals in all four games as she was second on the team with 12 goals scored on the weekend behind Benekou, who finished with 13 even despite not scoring in the early game.

E.B. Keeve had 13 saves for the Sun Devils but could not overcome the lack of offense on the other side of the pool.
