ASU T&F Teams In Second After Day One At MPSF

SEATTLE, Wash.—The Arizona State track and field teams opened the first day of competition at the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships in second on both the men’s and women’s sides on Friday at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor.

The men’s side picked up 37 points on the opening day, while the women’s team racked up 28. California currently sits in the lead on the men’s side with 40 points, and Arizona has 31 to lead the women’s side.

Redshirt senior Ryan Milus had a big day for the Sun Devils men’s team, scoring 10 points as he picked up the 200m dash title in 21.29. The race was his first 200m of the season, and Milus ran the winning time in the opening heat. The time also marks the No. 8 time in the ASU indoor record book.

Milus also ran the fastest time in the 60m dash prelims at 6.65. Milus, along with redshirt junior Devan Spann, and freshman Tatum Benard-Taylor, who both ran 6.76, will run in Saturday’s finals.

Also scoring in the 200m dash, Spann ran 21.32 for second in the field and eight team points. Spann’s time was a new personal best, edging his previous time of 21.33 from the Don Kirby Invite on Feb. 14.

Benard-Taylor ran a personal best 21.61 for sixth and three team points, while Will Henry ran 21.71, a new season best, for seventh and two team points, rounding ASU’s total of 23 from the event.

Sophomore Jasmine Gibbs and senior Asiah Gooden will also compete in the 60m dash finals after qualifying with times of 7.39 and 7.44, respectively.

Both sides of the 60m hurdles will have a representative in the finals as freshman Micha Auzenne qualified with a time of 8.45, and junior Cameron Taylor ran 8.05 for the men.

On the women’s side of the 200m, freshman LaTroya Franklin ran 24.06 for third overall and six team points, while sophomore Adriana Olivas set a new personal best in the 5000m at 16:43.13 for eighth overall and one team point for the women’s side. Olivas’ time is the new No. 8 mark in the ASU indoor book.

The women’s DMR team of freshman Kala Stone, senior Sarah Geren, freshman Chelsey Totten, and junior Payton Schutte ran 11:34.40 for sixth and three team points. The time marks the No. 8 time in the indoor record book.

Seniors Shaylah Simpson and Heather Arseneau were part of the multi-way tie for fourth on the women’s side of the pole vault, and picked up 7 total points for ASU. Redshirt senior Derick Hinch grabbed six points for the men’s team as he cleared a season-best 5.30m (17-4.50) for third.

In the women’s long jump, senior Alycia Herring took second with a jump of 5.83m (19-1.50), adding eight points to the women’s team. On the men’s side, Josh Dixon set a new personal best in the long jump at 7.04m (23-1.25) for fifth and four team points.

The first points of the day for the ASU women came from the weight throw, as redshirt freshman Ashley Weber threw 17.70m (58-1.00) for sixth and three team points. Junior Jessika Byrd threw a new personal best at 17.17m (56-4.00) for ninth.

In the men’s side of the DMR, Daniel Wong, Trae Armstrong, Tommy Williams, and Bernie Montoya ran 9:55.91 for fifth and four team points.

Saturday, the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships continues with the women’s shot put beginning at 10:30 a.m. PT.
