FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—The Arizona State track and field teams saw three student-athletes qualify for June’s NCAA Championships following Friday’s competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Meet at the University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field.
On the track, junior Brianna Tate placed eighth overall in the women’s 400m dash semis with a time of 52.96, while on the field, redshirt senior Anna Jelmini placed seventh in the women’s discus with a throw of 53.72m (176-03), and junior Bryan McBride finished the day in a tie for first in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.16m (7-1.00).
The trio will be in action June 11-14 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field for the national meet. This marks Tate’s first trip to the NCAAs in the 400m dash, while Jelmini will look to defend her title in the discus, and McBride last competed at the outdoor national meet in the high jump in 2012.
Two more Sun Devils qualified for semifinal races on Friday, starting with junior Cameron Taylor in the 110m hurdles. Taylor finished fifth in his heat and 16th overall at 14.03 and will compete on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT.
In the men’s 200m dash, redshirt junior Devan Spann ran 21.15, good for second in his heat and 21st overall. With the automatic qualification, Spann will run on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. CT.
Senior Sarah Geren just missed qualifying for nationals in the 400m hurdles, finishing 15th overall at 58.35, a new personal best. The time solidifies her position in the ASU record book at No. 9.
The NCAA West Preliminary meet will conclude on Saturday, and the Sun Devils will finalize their roster for the NCAA Championships. The field events will begin at 10 a.m. CT with the women’s hammer throw, while the events on the track will kick off at 6 p.m. CT with the men’s 4x100m relay prelims.
