FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—The final day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary meet at the University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field saw all four of Arizona State track and field’s relay teams qualify for the June’s NCAA Championships.
Including Friday’s qualifiers, the Sun Devils will send six individual athletes with the four relay teams to compete at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 11-14, at Oregon’s Hayward Field.
ASU opened the afternoon with the men’s 4x100m relay team of redshirt junior Devan Spann, senior Will Henry, senior Daveon Collins, and redshirt senior Ryan Milus winning their heat with a season best time of 39.08.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of senior Asiah Gooden, senior Alycia Herring, junior Brianna Tate, and freshman LaTroya Franklin followed with a time of 44.53, for second in their heat, automatically qualifying at seventh overall.
Junior Shelby Houlihan then punched her ticket to the NCAA meet, winning her heat in the 1500m semis with a time of 4:18.50, for third overall.
Following his run in the 4x100m relay, Spann went on to qualify in the 200m dash, finishing 10th overall and automatically qualifying at 20.76.
ASU wrapped up the day by qualifying in both 4x400m relays, starting with the men’s team of Spann, Cleveland, Henry, and Collins running the No. 6 time at 3:05.78, a new season best. On the women’s side, the team of Sara McDonald, LaTroya Franklin, Sarah Geren, and Brianna Tate 3:34.05 for ninth overall.
In the field, sophomore Josh Dixon marked a personal best on back-to-back jumps in the triple jump competition, finishing second overall at 16.03m (52-7.25). Dixon’s mark is the new No. 9 in the ASU record book, besting his previous PR of 15.70m (51-6.25).
Also for ASU, junior Cameron Taylor shattered his personal best in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.92, which is the new No. 7 in the ASU record book. Taylor finished 18th overall.
