PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team fell to top-ranked Stanford, 14-4, on Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
The game looked like it had the potential for a barnburner in the first quarter with ASU going goal for goal with the Cardinal and the team trailed by a score of 5-4 through the first eight minutes.
The Sun Devils would not score again, however, as Stanford racked up the next nine goals to pull away down the stretch for the 10-goal victory.
Each of ASU’s goals came from four different individuals as Alkistis Benekou, Petra Pardi, Ao Gao and Izabella Chiappini each found the back of the net in the opening frame.
E.B. Keeve logged 13 saves from the goalkeeper position.
The Cardinal were led by Ashley Grossman and Annika Dries, who each had four goals a piece.
The Sun Devils fell to 13-7 on the season with the loss and 1-3 in MPSF action. ASU will take on San Jose State tomorrow 12 p.m. PT/MT in San Jose, Calif.
