ANN ARBOR, Mich.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Wolverine Invitational, Sunday, with key victories on the singles court to open fall tournament play.
The Sun Devils began the day in doubles against DePaul. The doubles pairs of Smith/Krawczyk and Panoho/O’Sullivan battled the Blue Demons deep into the match their DePaul counterparts would end up recording the victories, 8-6.
In singles, the Sun Devils unpinned host Michigan 4-3 head-to-head on the courts. Sophomore Desirae Krawczyk, freshman Gussie O’Sullivan, sophomore Ebony Panoho and junior Joanna Smith each notched victories in singles for the Sun Devils.
In a touching moment off the court, O’Sullivan, a native of Melbourne, Australia, had a special guest come to watch her play her first collegiate tennis matches, Sunday. O’Sullivan’s grandmother, from Australia, has corresponded with a pen pal in the United States for over 60 years. The two have never met in person, but have such a fond kinship that the pen pal came out on Sunday to watch O’Sullivan compete in Michigan. The ASU freshman would handily win her singles matches, 6-4, 6-4 over Michigan’s Amy Zhu with her grandmother’s pen pal present.
The Sun Devil tennis team returns to action, Sept. 27-29, at the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.
