TEMPE, Ariz.—The 26th-ranked Arizona State women’s tennis team opens up dual competition, Saturday, in a double header against Northern Arizona. Competition begins at 10 a.m. MT at the Whiteman Tennis Center with the second match following at 2 p.m. MT.

“We are really looking forward to tomorrow’s match against NAU and the start of the dual meet season,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “Playing together as a team is the essence of college tennis.”

Individually the Sun Devils are a young team, fielding only two upperclassmen. Sophomore Stephanie Vlad leads ASU with a preseason singles ranking of 50th in the nation, while fellow sophomore Desirae Krawczyk is ranked 91st overall.

“We are a young team with no seniors so it will be fun to see the emergence of our now sophomores and juniors as they take leadership roles,” said McInerney.

Several team matches this season will be played in the new ITA dual meet format, including this Saturday’s meet against NAU. The experimental format was designed to increase the excitement in college tennis by expediting the pace of play.

The teams will play three doubles matches. Once one team has secured two of the three victories, the remaining doubles match shall not be completed. In singles, six singles matches will compete for the best of three sets. In lieu of a third set, a match tiebreaker will be played.

“We’re excited to try out the new experimental format in some of our matches this season,” said McInerney. “Whiteman Tennis Center isn’t Wimbledon. We love having the crowd involved in our matches and cheering the Sun Devils on to victory.”
