Ojai, Calif. - Navigating through the Pac-12 Doubles Invitational Championship bracket, picking up upset after upset along the way, the freshman-junior pairing of Kassidy Jump and Joanna Smith closed out their post-season conference run with a victory in the championship match on Sunday afternoon.
"Both Kassidy (Jump) and Joanna (Smith) played great, they had a lot of fun out there and it was fun to watch," ASU head coach Sheila McInerney said.
The Sun Devil pairing defeated third-ranked Brynn Boren and Zoë Scandalis of USC 8-6 to capture the trophy. The win over the Women of Troy marked the third upset of the tournament for the un-seeded ASU pairing.
"Both Joanna (Smith) and Kassidy (Jump) were super aggressive with their ground strokes and volleys. They set each other up really well and were the more aggressive team," McInerney said.
"They played aggressive, passionate doubles and their energy was fantastic."
Jump and Smith topped fourth ranked Caroline Doyle and Amelia Herring of Stanford, 8-4, in the semi-finals to reach the championship match.
The conference championship hardware won't only look good on the shelf in Tempe -- it will also gives the senior-less team a huge boost of confidence as the mindset shifts to the NCAA Tournament.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament begins on May 9, with the championship round wrapping up in Athens, GA. on May 20.
