Surprise, Ariz. - The 11th-ranked Arizona State baseball team jumped out to a six-run lead after the first inning and never looked back, dropping Winthrop 17-2 in the team's third game of the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz. Third baseman Michael Benjamin finished with a career-best five hits and second baseman Joey DeMichele led the team with five RBI.

Sun Devils (8-1) right-hander Trevor Williams (3-0) earned his third win of the season after giving up no earned runs on four hits with a trio of strikeouts in six innings.

ASU sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the opening frame. Five different Sun Devils collected an RBI, highlighted by a two-run single by outfielder Trever Allen and back-to-back RBI base hits by Benjamin and outfielder Andrew Aplin.

The Devils scored six runs again in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a two-run single by DeMichele and a two-run double by first baseman Abe Ruiz.

Benjamin collected his second RBI single of the game in the third inning, scoring outfielder James McDonald from second, to push ASU's lead to seven runs.

DeMichele recorded his first of a pair of two-run singles in the fourth and McDonald added an RBI double three batters later.

Freshman outfielder Jake Peevyhouse collected his first RBI of the season in the seventh inning to stretch the Devils' advantage to 15.

Left-hander Adrian Gomez pitched a scoreless seventh inning and right-hander Zak Miller made his first appearance of the season in the eighth inning, allowing no hits and no runs with a called strikeout.

Right-hander Billy Young, also in his first appearance of the season, came in to close out the ninth and gave up one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

DeMichele drove in the first run of the game on a double through the right side, scoring Kasey Coffman from third, who reached base two batters earlier on a walk. Abe Ruiz was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a walk to catcher Max Rossiter brought in the second run of the game. Allen scored Marrero, who singled up the middle his first time at the plate, and DeMichele. RBI singles by Benjamin and Aplin in the next two at-bats capped off the Devils' six-run inning.

Eagles (1-9) left-hander Mitchell Knox (0-3) took his third loss after giving up six runs on five hits in 0.2 innings pitched.

Winthrop threatened in the top of the third after Drew Hardee singled and advanced to second the following play on a fielder's choice. Patrick Gamblin drove a base hit to right field two batters later, but Allen threw Hardee out at home to end the inning.

The Eagles put up two runs in the fourth inning, including an RBI by Leighton Daniels.

The Sun Devils close out the 2012 Coca-Cola Classic on Sunday against St. Mary's. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. or 45 minutes after the end of the MLB spring training game.
