TEMPE, ARIZ. -- Utah swept Cal State Northridge earlier in the year with all three games decided in the ninth inning. Friday, in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Classic at Arizona State's Packard Stadium, the Matadors got a little revenge by scoring a run on a Wade Friesen pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 9-8 victory.

CSUN improved to 5-15 with the victory, while Utah dropped to 7-6.

The marathon game of 3-hours, 59-minutes, featured ties at 4-4 and 8-8 before the Matadors pulled out the heroics with the two-out, pinch-hit single that fell just behind Utah first baseman Jake Jordison. Utah trailed 7-6 after seven innings, but scored two unearned runs in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead. CSUN pulled even in the eighth and then won in the ninth.

CSUN reliever Edward Camacho (1-4) earned the win by giving up just two hits and two runs (both unearned) in three and two-thirds innings. Utah reliever Brady Martinez fell to 1-1 by giving up the game-winning run.

The Matadors out-hit the Utes 14-10 and were led at the plate by the 3-for-5 performance from leadoff hitter Keith Bowman. Second baseman Jesse Perez (2-for-5) and third baseman Mark McCauley (3-for-4, 2 RBI) helped round out the top three in the CSUN lineup that combined to go 8-for-14.

Utah had a big three-run home run from shortstop Cort Wilson and received two hits each from left fielder Mike Basham (2-for-5), catcher Wick Udy (2-for-5) and designated hitter Brett Sundberg (2-for-4).

Utah returns to tournament action tomorrow with a 7 p.m. game against host Arizona State. CS Northridge will face Southern Utah in the 1 p.m. game at Packard Stadium.
