SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Arizona State University cross country team competed at the NCAA West Region Championships at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ore., on Saturday morning where the Sun Devil men placed fifth overall and the women 13th in the qualifying meet for the NCAA Championships. Individually, Ben Engelhardt led the charge for the men as he placed 13th overall in 30:21.4 to earn all-region honors while the top women in the race for ASU was Lindsay Prescott, who finished 37th in 21:03.1.

In the team standings, No. 3 Oregon (63) and No. 2 Stanford (65) were the region’s automatic qualifiers to the national meet and were followed in the Top 5 by No. 22 Stanford (78), No. 13 Portland (131) and ASU (179). In the women’s race, No. 11 Washington (73) and No. 7 UO (77) were the automatic qualifiers and were followed in the Top 5 by No. 4 Stanford (86), No. 6 Arizona (90) and both No. 26 California and UC Santa Barbara (159).

Engelhardt was once again the team’s top finisher and put himself in line to potentially qualify as an individual for the national meet based upon his performance. He was followed across the line in the 10,000m race by Darius Terry, who ran 30:40.6 to finish 26th, just one place shy of joining Engelhardt as an all-region honoree (Top 25 are honored).

The men’s Top 5 scorers were rounded out by Daniel Lovell (31:04.2), Doug Smith (31:06.7) and Nick Happe (31:10.5), who placed 44th, 50th and 53rd, respectively, in the race. Two other Sun Devils also ran in the race as Matt Boughton (31:16.4) was 63rd overall and Steven Schnieders (31:28.8) was 76th.

On the women’s side, Prescott was the top Sun Devil while Cherise McNair (21:33.2), Alyssa Allison (21:34.5) and Kauren Tarver (21:41.1) all came in together, finishing 76th, 79th and 83rd, respectively.
