HILO, Hawaii - Arizona State remained unbeaten in the young 1999 season by opening up a five-game series at Hawaii Hilo with a 7-1 victory. The Sun Devils' Chad Pennington (1-0) tossed 7.0 innings, scattering eight hits while striking out nine. ASU blew open a tight contest with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Sun Devils improved their record to 4-0 while Hilo dropped to 3-4.
Jay Sitzman led the Devils at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Andrew Beinbrink and Scott Goodman each had two of ASU's 10 hits in the game. Hawaii Hilo's Thomas Ford took the loss, giving up two runs in 5.0 innings of work. Dan Friedberg completed the game for ASU, pitching the last two innings and giving up one unearned run.
