TEMPE, Ariz. - Five former Arizona State University baseball players will be playing in the Arizona Fall League as its 17th season begins Oct. 7. Tony Barnette of the Arizona Diamondbacks system, Jeff Larish of the Detroit Tigers system, Beau Vaughan of the Boston Red Sox system, Brett Wallace of the St. Louis Cardinals system, Tuffy Gosewisch of the Philadelphia Phillies system and Zechry Zinicola of the Washington Nationals system will all be part of the 2008 Arizona Fall League season. They bring the all-time total of former ASU players to play in the fall league to 30.

Travis Buck (A's), Paul Lo Duca (Marlins), Andre Ethier (Dodgers) and Dustin Pedroia (Red Sox) are all former Devils who participated in the Arizona Fall League and have since gone on to careers in Major League Baseball. In addition to the five players, former Devil Gary Allenson will be the manager of the Surprise Rafters this season.

Barnette, who will play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs, pitched for the Sun Devils for two seasons (2005-2006). He went 10-2 and recorded two saves with 123 strikeouts and just 36 walks over his two years at ASU. Barnette was a 10th round pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2006 draft, and this season he went 11-7 with a 3.87 ERA and 133 strikeouts for the Class AA Mobile BayBears.

Larish will be making his second straight appearance in the Arizona Fall League, for the Mesa Solar Sox this year. Larish played at ASU from 2002-2005, and he is second in school history with 51 career home runs. He was a First Team All-American in 2003 and a two-time First Team All-Pac-10 selection. Larish was named to the All-College World Series Team in 2005 after his three-homer game against Nebraska. He was a fifth round pick of the Tigers in the 2005 draft, and he was selected to the fall league's Rising Stars Showcase Game last year. In 2008, Larish hit .250 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI in 103 games with the Class AAA Toledo Mud Hens, and he also played 42 games in the Majors with the Tigers, batting .260 with two home runs and 16 RBI.

Vaughan, who will be with the Scottsdale Scorpions, played just one season at ASU in 2003. He pitched in 26 games that season, making 10 starts on the mound, and finished 10-6 with a 4.68 ERA and 105 strikeouts. Vaughan was a third round pick of the Red Sox in the 2003 draft, and this season he recorded 17 saves with a 2.33 ERA with the Class AA Portland Sea Dogs and the Class AAA Pawtucket Red Sox.

Wallace, who just finished a highly decorated three-year career with the Sun Devils in June, will be playing for the Peoria Saguaros. He is second in school history with a .398 batting average and tied for fourth with 45 career home runs, and he ranks in the top 10 all-time in RBI and total bases. Wallace was also the second player in school history to win two Pac-10 Player of the Year awards and hit over .400 twice. He was the 13th overall pick in the first round of this year's draft, and he hit .337 with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBI in 54 combined games with the Class A Quad City River Bandits and the Class AA Springfield Cardinals.

Gosewisch is making his second straight appearance in the Fall League.

Zinicola, who will team up with Wallace on the Peoria Saguaros, will also be playing in the fall league for a second consecutive season. He played three seasons at ASU (2004-2006), tying a then-freshman record with eight saves in his debut season. Zinicola went 10-9 with 18 career saves for the Devils, and also hit .276 with five home runs. He earned Freshman All-American honors in 2004 and was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection that same year. He was a sixth round pick of the Nationals in 2006, and had nine saves this season while splitting his time between the Class A Potomac Nationals, Class AA Harrisburg Senators and Class AAA Columbus Clippers.

Allenson played for the Sun Devils from 1973-1976. He hit .306 with 21 home runs and 121 RBI over his four seasons at ASU, and he was named All-Western Athletic Conference as a senior. Allenson went on to be a ninth round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 1976 draft, and he played seven seasons (1979-1985) in the Majors, six with the Red Sox and one with the Toronto Blue Jays.
