TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State completed the three-game sweep of the Washington State Cougars on Sunday afternoon, winning 10-4. Jake Barrett (4-3) was solid on the bump for 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs to earn the win and help ASU improve to 25-9 on the year, 8-4 in Pac-10 play.
The Sun Devils pounded out 14 hits off of four Washington State pitchers, with every player in the lineup collecting at least one hit.
Matt Newman got the scoring started in the second inning, blasting a ball over the right field fence for his fifth homer of the season and a 2-0 ASU lead. Later in the inning Johnny Ruettiger would single to center scoring Austin Barnes on the play. ASU would add another run in the third inning when Riccio Torrez took third on a fly ball to left. The relay throw from the shortstop ended up in the ASU dugout, allowing Torrez to score and make it 4-0.
The Cougars would cut into the Devils lead in the top of the fifth inning after Cody Bartlett singled to center to drive in Trace Tam Sing and Collin Slaybaugh to make it 4-2.
The lead for the Devils would increase in the bottom of the sixth after Aplin drove a double into right field allowing Deven Marrero and Matt Newman to score on the play. Three batters later with Aplin on second, Riccio Torrez would single to center to bring home Aplin. The Devils would add two more runs in the inning on hits by Joey DeMichele and Zach Wilson to push the score to 9-2. ASU would add one more run in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
While the Devils offense was rolling, their pitching was the story of the game. Jake Barrett struck out four and scattered four hits before giving way to Mitchell Lambson and Trevor Williams. Lambson would throw 2.1 innings, striking out two, while Williams threw a perfect ninth inning to secure the victory for the Devils.
The Devils will continue pac-10 play Thursday, April 21 when they travel to play California. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Evans Diamond.
