Eight More ASU Baseball Players Selected In 2010 MLB Draft

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eight more Arizona State University baseball players were selected on Tuesday at the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

In the eighth round, junior right-handed pitcher Merrill Kelly went 251st overall to the Tampa Bay Rays and senior outfielder Kole Calhoun went 264th overall to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Kelly is 10-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 16 starts on the mound this year, and Calhoun is hitting .325 with a team-best 16 home runs on the season.

One round later, senior left-handed pitcher Josh Spence was picked by the San Diego Padres as the 274th overall selection. Spence missed the 2010 season due to injury.

Sophomore shortstop/outfielder Drew Maggi was selected in the 15th round (447th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Maggi is hitting .343 and leads ASU with 34 stolen bases, and he is the only Sun Devil to start every game this season.

Junior left-handed pitcher Jimmy Patterson went in the 18th round (551st overall) to the Tampa Bay Rays. He is 1-0 with a 4.99 ERA in 14 appearances (five starts) on the season.

Senior third baseman Raoul Torrez was picked in the 21st round (631st overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Torrez, who is serving as a team captain for the second straight year, is hitting .283 with 44 RBI this season.

Two more Sun Devils went in the 23rd round, as junior catcher Xorge Carrillo went to the San Diego Padres (694th overall) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Borup went to the Philadelphia Phillies (711th overall). Carrillo, who missed more than a month of the season due to injury, is hitting .353 in 16 games, while Borup is 11-1 with a 4.08 ERA in 16 appearances (15 starts) on the mound this season.

Those eight join Seth Blair (46th overall) and Jordan Swagerty (75th overall) to give ASU 10 players selected so far in the 2010 Draft. Arizona State leads all schools with 368 total picks since the draft's inception in 1965.

The 2010 Draft will conclude on Wednesday with rounds 31 through 50.
