#12- Sun Devils Dominate In Classroom As Well As On Field
The 2008 Sun Devil baseball team not only was successful on the diamond, but also in the classroom. Five members of the 2008 Sun Devils were named Academic All-Pac-10 selections, highlighted by First Teamers Petey Paramore, Ryan Sontag and Mike Leake. Dustin Brader and Rocky Laguna each earned Second Team honors. 2008 marked the 12th consecutive season Arizona State has had at least two members of the Pac-10 team.
Sontag and Paramore were each named to the Pac-10's First Team for the second straight year. In order to be eligible for selection to the Pac-10 team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and either be a starter or a significant contributor. True freshman and transfer students are not eligible.
In addition to the conference honors, Arizona State also had national academic honors. Paramore and Leake were each named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII selections, the second time in the past three years ASU has landed two student-athletes on the All-District VIII list.
Thanks to his First Team All-District VIII status, Petey Paramore was also named an ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American, becoming the sixth Academic All-American under head coach Pat Murphy. Paramore carried a 3.65 GPA as a BIS major focusing on business and communication.
The individual academic accolades were part of one of the best academic seasons in ASU baseball history. 27 members of the 2008 team turned in a GPA of 2.5 or better, while 14 of those had GPA's over 3.0 in 2008.
